Abstract

The authors discuss the efficacy and difficulties in providing veno-venous extra corporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) coupled with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in a patient with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome due to influenza pneumonia. The authors analyze the modification of the paradigm of respiratory support of patients with ARDS - from early ideas of absolute necessity of optimization of gas exchange till modern conception “protective ventilation” in combination with ECMO.
