Abstract

In October 2018 the 100th anniversary will be marked since the birth of Adrian Kantrowitz, one of the brightest surgeons in the US. His creative activity was connected with the search for methods of heart failure treating. His fame was due to the first clinical heart transplantation in the US, three days after transplantation carried out by Kristian Bernard in December 1967. Kantrowitz was one of the most prolific inventors, his revolutionary innovations include an implantable pacemaker, an artificial left ventricle of the heart, a drive and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation and other circulatory support devices commonly used in the world practice for the treatment of patients with heart failure. The article summarizes the biography of the surgeon, his main achievements and discoveries that provided him a place of honor in the history of medical science.
