Leonid Mikhailovich Roshal, Dr. med. habil., professor of pediatric surgery. Main fields of practical and research activities: disaster medicine, medical emergencies in children, neonatal surgery, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedics, surgical infections, pediatric laparoscopic surgery, laser-assisted surgery. L.M. Roshal is the founder of the scientific school in pediatric surgery and the development of methods for the conservative treatment of surgical diseases. In the recent years, his main scientific interests have lain primarily in the field of clinical and basic research into the mechanisms of damage formation and repair in injured children. L.M. Roshal is the author of 535 literature publications including 8 monographs, guidelines, and manuals (in co-authorship). He is a winner of the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements prize and a holder of 8 certificates of invention. He acted as the scientific adviser under whose direction 27 theses for the PhD degree in medicine and 7 doctor of science theses were defended.

L.M. Roshal graduated as a pediatrician from N.I. Pirogov Second Moscow State Medical Institute in 1957and embarked upon a career of a primary care physician for a pediatric polyclinic. After a course of training in the clinical internship, he moved to M.F. Vladimirsky Moscow Regional Clinical Institute to work in the capacity of a research scientist in the Department of Surgery. In 1981, he took charge of the Department of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics at the National Research and Practical Centre of Children’s Health, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, and was appointed director for the Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology, Moscow Health Department in 2004.

During his work for M.F. Vladimirsky Moscow Regional Clinical Institute during the period from 1961 till 1980, L.M. Roshal concentrated the main efforts on the organization of surgical care for newborn babies in the Moscow Region. Simultaneously, he continued to work in practically all fields of pediatric surgery.

In 1982, L.M. Roshal was elected the head of the Department of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics at the Research Institute of Pediatrics, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, later incorporated into the National Research and Practical Centre of Children’s Health, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, based at K.A. Timiryazev Children’s City Clinical Hospital No 20, one of the oldest medical facilities in Moscow. In 2003, the hospital was redesignated as the Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery, and L.M. Roshal was put in charge of it as its director. Since 2015, he has been acting as the president of the institute and totally engaged himself with emergency surgery and disaster medicine.

Throughout the whole life of L.M. Roshal, his professional work has been going hand in hand with extensive public activity. Since the early 2000s, L.M. Roshal has been closely engaged in promoting education and securing juridical protection for the medical profession. In 2010, he founded the National Medical Chamber and was elected its president.

1989. The trip to Chelyabinsk region in the capacity of the head of a team of physicians to provide the medical care for the children involved in the catastrophic railway accident at the Chelyabinsk-Ufa line section in which 650 people died including children as a result of the train explosion.

2002 Acted as a middleman in the talks with terrorists holding hostages in the theatre centre at Dubrovka, Moscow. Rescued children and provided medications for the hostages. Detained by the terrorists together with the hostages during 5 hours. Delivered from captivity by efforts of Mark Franchetti, the Moscow-based correspondent for The Sunday Times.
