The manual summarizes the
results of the studies conducted in Russian and foreign countries on the
microbiology, epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis, clinical picture, and
treatment of the infection caused by different species of Legionella. A
detailed account of the cycle of legionellae and the specific features of
their microbiology and genetics gives an insight into the mechanisms
responsible for the spread and pathogenesis of the infection. A
comprehensive approach is first proposed to organize a microbiological
monitoring of the objects that present an epidemiological hazard; the basic
principles of prevention have been developed. Recommendations are given to
choose diagnostic studies and to improve a specialized laboratory network.
