304 p.
ISBN 5-225-04237-6

The monograph is dedicated to theoretical and practical aspects of a problem of opioid abuse and dependence and consists of three parts. The first part incorporates the latest knowledge on pharmacology of opioids and neurobiology of opioid dependence. Besides the common intelligence the data on pharmacology, toxicology and abuse potential of separate opioids — both street drugs and medicinal preparations — are considered. The second part covers clinical questions of opioid abuse. Besides the phase conditions of opioid dependence (drug intoxication, withdrawal, postwithdrawal state and remission) the questions of psychopathology of opioid dependence such as infectious, visceral and neurological consequences of opioid abuse are highlighted. The third part focuses on the basic models of opioid dependence treatment with the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Methadone maintenance and other programmes of opioid substitution are minutely considered.
