Cognitive
impairment in patients with diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus (DB) is associated with cognitive deficit and is
characterized by increased risk of dementia development: both vascular
dementia and Alzheimer disease. Pathomorphological and neurophysiological
findings typical of the brain in patients with DM confirm the presence of
cognitive impairment (CI). The pathogenesis of CI is not yet completely
understood. But its multifactorial character is clear. It involves metabolic,
vascular and degenerative changes related to chronic hyperglycemia and
probably caused by negative impact of insulin on the cerebrum. The pattern
of CI includes neurodynamic component as well as primary and secondary
memory disorders. The efficacy of insulin metabolites as one of the
therapeutic approaches to CI administration is under investigation.
Key Words: diabetes mellitus, cognitive impairment,
dementia, insulin
